Prof. Jurg Keller

Biography

Professor Jurg Keller is Deputy Director of the Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC) at The University of Queensland and Professor in the School of Chemical Engineering. He has also an Australian Professorial Fellowship from ARC (Australian Research Council). He is an eminent international leader in the field of environmental biotechnology, with focus on biological wastewater treatment, microbial electrochemical technology, water recycling and resource (nutrients, energy) recovery. His work on microbial electrochemical technology is leading to new ways to recover nutrients (N and P) from source-separated urine. While working at the leading edge of research and development in this field, he is also heavily involved in collaborative and consulting projects with industry partners across Australia and New Zealand. He was Director of the AWMC since its inception in 1996 until 2014 when he took over the role of Deputy Director of Research. The Centre is one of the leading research centers in this field worldwide with over 100 staff and students investigating innovative ways to improve water management. He published 268 manuscripts with over 16,349 citations (h index = 66 based on Scopus), more than 250 international conference publications, including over 25 invited/and or keynote presentation in the last 10 years. He has published articles in top journals such as Science, Nature, Energy and Environmental Science, Water Research and Environmental Science and Technology. He received his B.E. (1986) and Ph.D. (1991) from ETH Zurich.​
