Biography
Dr. Korneel Rabaey is professor and head of the Department of Biochemical and Microbial Technology at Ghent University since September 2011. Before that, he was senior lecturer and incoming director/founder of the Centre for Microbial Electrosynthesis at The University of Queensland where he is now Honorary Professor. He is internationally recognized for his work in the field of bioelectrochemical systems, particularly with respect to novel process development. He has published over 150 papers in this field (~100 A1/international peer reviewed, > 11000 citations, H-index 49). He was senior author on a seminal paper regarding the methodology of Microbial Fuel Cell research, published in 2006 and already cited more than 2000 times. He has been lead editor of a comprehensive book on bioelectrochemical systems, including 22 contributed chapters by top experts in the field. Recently, he was identified as ISI Highly Cited Researcher. He has over the years studied microbial ecology in the context of bioelectrochemistry and driven technology development, by better integrating electrochemical concepts in this typical microbial or environmental engineering driven field. This has lead to the first pilot plant microbial fuel cell (2007). Until October 2015, he was president of the International Society for Microbial Electrochemical Technology (ISMET) and regular keynote speaker at international conferences. Professor Rabaey was awarded a ERC Starter Grant of the European Research Council in 2011, which allows him to work on the interface between microorganisms and polarized surfaces.
