Biography

Dr. Pascal Saikaly is an Associate Professor in the Biological and Environmental Sciences and Engineering Division. He joined KAUST in September 2010. Before joining KAUST, Dr. Saikaly spent two years as an Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering at the American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon. He received his Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of Cincinnati (Ohio, U.S.). He received his master’s degree in environmental technology and his bachelor’s degree in biology from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. Dr. Saikaly’s research lies at the interface of microbial ecology and environmental biotechnology. Understanding the microbial ecology of natural and engineered microbial ecosystems is essential for the successful application of microorganisms in environmental biotechnology. His specific research interests include: coupling microbial electrochemical technologies with membrane filtration processes for wastewater treatment with resource recovery, aerobic granular sludge system for biological nutrient removal, and anammox processes for mainstream wastewater treatment.
