The Water Desalination and Reuse Center extends warmest congratulations to Alaa Ragab, who successfully defended her thesis entitled "Investigating Effects of Electron Donor Availability on Cathodic Microbial Community Structure and Functional Dynamics in Electromethanogenesis" on October 27, 2019.

The focus of her Ph.D. was to expand the understanding of the dynamics and function of methane-producing biofilms grown on cathodes in electromethanogenic reactors in the presence of two different electron donors: the cathode and hydrogen evolving from the cathode surface.

"KAUST has been home for a long time, and while the journey has had its share of difficulties and frustrations, its been an overall unforgettable experience. I'm extremely grateful to Professor Pascal Saikaly for his mentorship and support, Dr. Krishna Katuri, for his suggestions and encouragement and the rest of my colleagues in the Environmental Biotechnology group, and the WDRC as a whole.", Alaa said.

Alaa completed her undergraduate studies at the German University in Cairo, after which she joined KAUST in 2011 to begin her graduate studies. In 2014, Alaa joined WDRC as a Ph.D. student after obtaining her M.Sc. in Bioscience.
