This summer, Prof. Noreddine Ghaffour's SustainableDesalTech Lab hosted four talented 11th and 12th-grade students from The KAUST School (TKS) and The World Academy (TWA), KAEC, as part of the four-week WISER Internship Program at KAUST.
During their internship, the students are introduced to the fundamental principles of seawater desalination, focusing on the fabrication of polymeric membranes and AI/process modeling. Through a combination of seminars and hands-on lab training, they gain valuable knowledge on operating different desalination systems, such as membrane distillation, reverse osmosis, and forward osmosis. To provide them with a comprehensive understanding of the field, the students also had the opportunity to visit a pilot-scale SWRO (Seawater Reverse Osmosis) plant. This allowed them to witness firsthand the functioning of an actual desalination facility capable of producing high-quality portable water. By empowering young minds with knowledge, skills, and practical exposure, Prof. Ghaffour's lab is contributing to developing sustainable solutions for our water needs.
